History
The origins of the Peruvian Hairless Dog can be traced back a long way. Depictions of naked dogs can be found on ceramics and textiles from the Moche culture, which lived in what is now Peru from around 100 to 800 AD. It is believed that the dogs were not only kept as companions and guard dogs, but also had ritual significance. Some sources suggest that they were used as a cure for certain diseases. The breed has fallen on hard times and was almost extinct until a conservation breeding program was established in the 1980s. The FCI officially recognized the Peruvian Hairless Dog in 1985. Today the breed is nationally recognized in Peru and is protected as the country's cultural heritage.
The Peruvian hairless dog, also known as Perro sin Pelo del Perú, originally served as a hunting and guard dog and is characterized by its hairless appearance.
