History
The American Toy Terrier originally comes from the USA and was bred there in the late 19th century as a small rat catcher. They are a miniature version of the larger American Terrier, known for their skills as a rat catcher and guard dog. The breed was developed to create a smaller, easier to handle dog that still retains the energy and courage of its larger counterpart. Although they were originally bred as working dogs, American Toy Terriers are now primarily popular as companion dogs. They were officially recognized as a separate breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1936 and have since been a popular choice for people looking for a small but energetic and loving companion.
