This puppy, a female named Josephine, was raised by Edwin and Willie Scott, who recognized that this hairless terrier had the potential to become a breed of its own. Josephine was later successfully crossed and produced hairless puppies. These puppies became the basis of the American Hairless Terrier breed. The American Hairless Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2016 and is therefore officially recognized as a separate breed. Despite their short history, the breed has quickly made a name for themselves, especially among allergy sufferers, as their lack of fur makes them hypoallergenic.

Als starke Allergikerin war der American Hairless Terrier für mich die letzte Hoffnung auf einen eigenen Hund – und es funktioniert fantastisch, ich zeige keinerlei Reaktionen! Wer allerdings denkt, dass ein nackter Hund weniger Arbeit macht, der täuscht sich gewaltig. Die Hautpflege ersetzt hier einfach das Bürsten.
Im Sommer müssen wir unseren Rüden vor jedem längeren Spaziergang mit parfümfreier Sonnencreme (mindestens LSF 30) eincremen, da seine Haut sonst sofort verbrennt. Im Winter wiederum friert er extrem schnell und zittert, weshalb ein hochwertiger Hundemantel oder Pullover bei kalten Temperaturen absolute Pflicht ist.
Zudem darf man nicht vergessen, dass man sich einen waschechten Terrier ins Haus holt. Er ist ein wahres Energiebündel, fordert seine tägliche Bewegung und liebt anspruchsvolle Beschäftigungen wie Agility oder Trick-Training. Wenn er geistig nicht ausgelastet ist, neigt er dazu, im Garten tiefe Löcher zu buddeln.

Unsere Hündin ist ein unglaublich anhängliches Familienmitglied und liebt unsere Kinder über alles. Am liebsten kuschelt sie stundenlang mit uns unter der Decke, um sich aufzuwärmen. Sie ist extrem menschenbezogen und will überall dabei sein. Das Alleinebleiben mussten wir deshalb von Anfang an in ganz kleinen Schritten trainieren, da sie anfangs sofort ausgiebig gejault hat.
Was man bei dieser Rasse definitiv nicht unterschätzen darf, ist der ausgeprägte Wach- und Schutzinstinkt. Sie schlägt extrem schnell an, sobald sich jemand unserem Grundstück nähert. Wir mussten sehr konsequent daran arbeiten, ihr beizubringen, dass Besucher keine Bedrohung darstellen, da sie sonst dazu neigt, lieber einmal zu viel als zu wenig zu bellen.
Sie ist zwar extrem intelligent und lernt unfassbar schnell, bringt aber auch den typischen Terrier-Dickkopf mit. Wenn sie ihren Willen nicht bekommt oder unterfordert ist, kann sie sehr stur werden. Eine liebevolle, aber absolut konsequente Erziehung ist hier das A und O.

Wir haben unsere Hündin damals aus einer Tierschutz-Beschlagnahmung übernommen. Was uns im Vergleich zu anderen Nackthunden sofort positiv aufgefallen ist: Da die Haarlosigkeit beim American Hairless Terrier rezessiv vererbt wird, hat sie im Gegensatz zu dominant haarlosen Rassen wie dem Chinesischen Schopfhund keinerlei Zahnprobleme und besitzt ein vollzahniges, kräftiges Gebiss.
Dennoch sollte man die Gesundheit bei dieser Rasse nicht auf die leichte Schulter nehmen. Da sie genetisch eng mit dem Rat Terrier verwandt ist, muss man beim Kauf extrem auf Erbkrankheiten wie die Primäre Linsenluxation (PLL, die zur Erblindung führen kann) und Patellaluxation achten und nur bei Züchtern kaufen, die die Elterntiere entsprechend testen lassen.
Im Alltag ist sie extrem sozialverträglich mit unserem Ersthund, aber draußen merkt man doch ab und zu das Erbe ihrer Vorfahren. Der Jagdtrieb ist zwar meistens gut kontrollierbar, aber sie fixiert leidenschaftlich gerne Mäuselöcher und geht auch mal im Unterholz stöbern, wenn man nicht aufpasst.
