The essentials — key facts, traits, and health priorities — before you dive deeper.
Health grade
Relative to other breeds
As a hairless breed, the Argentinische Pila genetically suffers from ectodermal dysplasia, which directly leads to missing teeth (oligodontia) and very sensitive skin. Since no official breed-specific health tests have been established for this rare breed, the risk of skin issues and dental malocclusions remains high. Despite their otherwise robust build, these breed-typical defects limit their overall health rating.

What matters most
Especially with a Argentine Pila, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Argentinischer Pila is an intelligent, alert, hairless primitive breed—valued for centuries in South America as a living hot water bottle and alarm system, who bonds closely with their humans but remains skeptical of strangers.
Perfect for you if:
- You are looking for an extremely affectionate companion who, as a hairless primitive breed, not only loves physical closeness and warmth but truly needs it.
- You live in an apartment or house and are looking for an adaptable dog without an extreme urge for intense physical activity.
- You enjoy guiding a sensitive, intelligent dog using positive reinforcement, empathy, and patience.
- You appreciate a dog that focuses strongly on its core family and doesn't joyfully greet every stranger immediately.
Less ideal if:
- You spend hours outside in all kinds of weather—as a hairless dog without insulating fur, they cool down quickly and absolutely require UV protection in the summer.
- You live in an environment with thin walls and cannot tolerate barking—they were bred as an alarm system and will reliably report unusual noises.
- You expect a dog that plays indiscriminately with everyone at the dog park and lets anyone pet them.
- You work full-time away from home and would need to leave them alone for long periods regularly.
The real vibes check
An Argentinischer Pila is not a distant rarity, but a walking heating pad with a built-in radar. They literally stick to their primary caregivers and prefer to share your body heat under the duvet at night. You aren't getting a rugged outdoor adventurer, but a sensitive, exclusive shadow who rations their love strictly—giving one hundred percent of it to you.

History
The Argentinische Pila is a pre-Columbian hairless dog breed with roots dating back well before the 19th century. Historical evidence and genetic studies suggest that these dogs are closely related to the Peruvian Hairless Dog. It is believed that the ancestors of the Pila arrived in the northwestern provinces of present-day Argentina during the 15th century through the expansion of the Inca Empire, where they were highly valued by indigenous peoples. Due to their hairlessness, these dogs radiate intense body heat, which is why they were traditionally used as companion dogs and bed warmers during cold nights, as well as for alleviating rheumatic complaints. Over the centuries, the breed adapted excellently to the climatic conditions of South America. Although the Argentinische Pila has a long cultural tradition in its homeland and is recognized by the Argentine kennel club in three different size varieties, it still lacks official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. In modern times, the Pila continues to be valued as an adaptable, intelligent, and robust companion dog, with breeding efforts focused primarily on preserving its original, primitive characteristics.

Training & Education
The Argentine Pila is an intelligent and eager-to-learn dog that requires consistent and patient training. Similar to the Labrador and German Shepherd, it is important to establish clear rules and structures from the beginning. The Pila shows a high adaptability and can do well both in the city and in the countryside, provided it is sufficiently mentally and physically stimulated. Training should be varied and positive to keep its motivation high. The Argentine Pila benefits from short but regular training sessions, where praise and rewards are emphasized. It has a strong protective instinct that must be controlled and socialized early to avoid unwanted behavior. As with the German Shepherd, good socialization with people and other animals is essential to obtain a balanced and confident dog. The Pila is well suited for various dog sports and tasks but also needs phases of rest and relaxation to avoid being overwhelmed. Overall, the Argentine Pila requires dedicated training that promotes its natural abilities while ensuring balance. Those willing to invest time and patience will gain a loyal, vigilant, and versatile companion.
Nutrition & Care
Argentinian Pila: The Argentinian Pila requires a balanced diet that is rich in high-quality proteins to support its muscular build. Be careful to avoid overfeeding, as this breed can be prone to overweight. Food specifically tailored to medium-sized, active dogs is ideal. The Pila's short, smooth coat is easy to care for and sheds minimally. Regular brushing once a week is enough to keep the coat clean and healthy. Bathing is only necessary when needed. The Argentinian Pila is well adapted to a temperate climate but also tolerates warmer temperatures well. Nevertheless, in very hot weather, sufficient shade and water should be provided to prevent overheating. In winter, a dog coat can be useful in very cold temperatures, as the short coat offers little protection.

Experiences with the Argentine Pila
