The history of the Ariégenois dates back to the 19th century in the Ariège department of southern France. It was developed through the deliberate crossing of medium-sized, purebred French scenthounds, such as the Grand Bleu de Gascogne or the Grand Gascon Saintongeois, with local, lighter Briquet dogs. The primary breeding goal was to create an agile, enduring, and passionate scenthound for pack hunting in the challenging, dry, and rocky landscapes of the Pyrenees. Contrary to erroneous historical accounts, the Ariégenois was never used as a retriever or primarily for tracking wounded game. From the beginning, its true purpose lay in the persistent pursuit of game trails, particularly when hunting hares and roe deer. Due to its keen sense of smell and characteristic, melodic baying during the hunt, it proved to be an extremely efficient pack hound. In 1912, the first official breed club was founded in France, marking an important milestone for the pure breeding and standardization of the breed. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale currently classifies the Ariégenois in the scenthound group. To this day, it is highly valued in France and other parts of Europe and is primarily used for its original purpose as a hunting specialist in packs, where its manageability and friendly nature also allow it to integrate well into the pack.

Als wir unsere Ariégeois-Hündin über den Tierschutz adoptiert haben, wussten wir zwar, dass ein Laufhund einzieht, aber das Ausmaß ihrer Jagdleidenschaft hat uns anfangs doch kalt erwischt. Sobald wir im Wald unterwegs sind, ist sie voll in ihrem Element – ihre Nase klebt am Boden, und wenn sie einen Hasen oder ein Reh sichtet, gibt es kein Halten mehr. Freilauf ist ohne Leine bei uns absolut unmöglich, da sie sofort auf und davon wäre.
Um sie geistig und körperlich auszulasten, haben wir mit dem Mantrailing und der Fährtenarbeit angefangen. Es ist unglaublich faszinierend zu sehen, mit welcher Schnelligkeit und Präzision sie eine Spur ausarbeitet. Ihre feine Nase ist einfach unschlagbar, und diese Arbeit lastet sie perfekt aus.
Im Haus ist sie dagegen eine absolut sanfte, anhängliche und verschmuste Seele. Sie liebt den engen Familienanschluss und ist extrem freundlich zu allen Menschen. Man muss allerdings beim Essen aufpassen: Sie ist rassetypisch extrem verfressen und nutzt jede Gelegenheit, um sich heimlich einen Snack zu stibitzen!

Ich führe meinen Ariégeois-Rüden jagdlich und könnte mir für die Hasenjagd im hügeligen Gelände keinen besseren Begleiter vorstellen. Er bringt eine enorme Schnelligkeit, Wendigkeit und eine erstaunliche Ausdauer mit, die man bei seiner eher leichten, eleganten Statur gar nicht vermuten würde. Wenn er auf der Fährte arbeitet, ist sein weithin hörbares, klangvolles Geläut einfach fantastisch.
Was ich an der Rasse besonders schätze, ist die Kombination aus Initiative bei der Arbeit und Gehorsam im Alltag. Er ordnet sich schnell unter und lässt sich im Vergleich zu anderen Meutehunden sehr leicht erziehen. Er ist extrem arbeitswillig und zeigt viel Unternehmungsgeist.
Wer sich so einen Hund anschafft, muss sich aber im Klaren sein, dass es sich um einen reinen Arbeitssportler handelt. Ohne eine klare Aufgabe im Revier oder eine adäquate jagdliche Auslastung wird dieser Hund nicht glücklich. Das pflegeleichte Fell ist zwar ein Pluspunkt, aber die Ansprüche an Bewegung und mentale Beschäftigung sind enorm hoch.

Man darf diese Hunde nicht unterschätzen: Sie wirken im Haus zwar ruhig und fast aristokratisch zurückhaltend, aber draußen explodiert ihre Energie förmlich. Wer einen unkomplizierten Hund für den reinen Stadtpark sucht, ist mit einem Ariégeois definitiv falsch beraten.
