The essentials — key facts, traits, and health priorities — before you dive deeper.
Health grade
Relative to other breeds
The Hairless Chihuahua receives a D grade because the genetically linked hairlessness (ectodermal dysplasia) is almost always accompanied by severe dental malformations and extremely sensitive skin. Furthermore, the breed is prone to typical toy breed issues such as patellar luxation and tracheal collapse. Since there are no mandatory health tests required for this specific variant, purchasing one involves a significant health risk.

What matters most
Especially with a Chihuahua, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →Is the Chihuahua right for you?
The hairless Chihuahua is an extremely loyal, vigilant companion dog—bred to be a constant human companion, often compensating for its tiny size with the lion-hearted courage of a guard dog, while requiring special protection from the weather and sun.
Perfect for you if:
- You are looking for an extremely people-oriented companion who prefers to be by your side 24/7—they were bred to demand exactly that kind of absolute closeness.
- You live in an apartment and don't have a garden, as shorter walks adapted to the temperature are often perfectly sufficient for them.
- You are prepared to dress your dog appropriately for the weather in winter and consistently protect their sensitive, bare skin from sunburn in the summer.
- You treat them like a full-fledged dog despite their tiny size and set clear rules so they don't turn into a little tyrant.
Less ideal if:
- You expect a quiet dog that calmly ignores visitors—as a vigilant companion, they will use their voice the moment something seems suspicious to them.
- You have small, boisterous children who cannot yet properly gauge the extreme physical fragility of this dog in everyday life.
- You are looking for a robust outdoor partner for hours of hiking in wind, rain, or cold.
The real vibes check
A hairless Chihuahua is not a fashion accessory, but a whole dog in the body of an eternal puppy that challenges you with the attitude of a great protector, yet shivers at the first autumn breeze. If you take them seriously and protect them, you get an intrepid shadow; if you just coddle them, they will loudly take control of your life.
Breed Profile
The Hairless Chihuahua is an extraordinary variant of the Chihuahua, one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. This breed is characterized by its lack of a coat, which gives it a unique and striking appearance. Despite their small size, Hairless Chihuahuas have a lively and courageous character. They belong to the group of companion dogs and are known for their close bond with their owners. Their body is compact and delicate, with large, expressive eyes and distinctive, upright ears. Due to their lack of fur, they require special care, especially protection from cold and sunlight. Hairless Chihuahuas are ideal companions for people looking for a small, affectionate, and high-maintenance dog.

History
The so-called hairless Chihuahua is not a distinct dog breed recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) or other major kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club (AKC). The existence of these dogs as a deliberate breeding line is highly controversial and rejected by reputable breeding associations. Historically, the standard Chihuahua originates from Mexico and likely has its roots in the companion dogs of the Toltecs and Aztecs. In the late 19th century, travelers brought these small dogs from the Mexican state of Chihuahua to the USA, where the standard Chihuahua was officially recognized by the AKC in 1904. However, hairlessness in some specimens is not a historical breeding goal but generally results from a genetic defect, known as alopecia, or from the deliberate crossbreeding with other hairless breeds such as the Mexican Hairless Dog, the Xoloitzcuintli. Such animals are often falsely marketed as rare or hypoallergenic varieties. In reputable cynology, the intentional breeding for hairlessness in Chihuahuas is considered a breeding fault, as it can be associated with health limitations for the animals. The original and still valid purpose of the Chihuahua is that of a companion dog, with the breed standard exclusively permitting short-haired and long-haired varieties.

Character & Temperament
The hairless Chihuahua is a small but extremely lively and affectionate companion. Despite its small size, it shows great self-confidence and a strong bond with its owner. It loves being the center of attention and greatly enjoys the closeness to its family. Its small size makes it particularly suitable for city living or smaller apartments, yet it requires regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay balanced. The hairless Chihuahua is very eager to learn but can also show a stubborn character, which is why consistent yet loving training is important. Due to its lack of fur, it is especially sensitive to cold and should be protected accordingly. It is not a typical guard dog but often shows good alertness through its lively nature and reliably alerts to strangers. Its prey drive is rather low, which makes training easier. Overall, the hairless Chihuahua is a loyal, lively, and affectionate dog that needs a lot of attention and is excellent as a family and companion dog.
| Trainability Willing to learn with clear rules and regular training. | Balanced |
| Watchfulness Reports unusual activity but stays controlled. | Moderate |
| Openness to Strangers Careful around unfamiliar people — thaws slowly. | Cautious |

What Awaits You
The hairless Chihuahua is a small, lively dog with a unique appearance. He is affectionate and seeks closeness to his people. Despite his size, he often shows great courage and alertness. These dogs require loving training and are well suited as companions in the city or apartment.
Housing & Care
Hairless Chihuahuas are lively and affectionate companions that form especially close bonds with their owners. Despite their small size, they have a confident and sometimes somewhat stubborn personality. They are well suited for individuals or couples who can devote a lot of time to attention and care. Due to their sensitive coat and skin, they require special protection from cold and sun, which should be taken into account when keeping them. When dealing with children, hairless Chihuahuas are rather cautious; small children should therefore learn to interact gently to avoid injuries. They can get along well with other pets if socialized early. Mental stimulation and short, regular walks are important to balance their lively character and prevent boredom.
Owning a dog is not only a privilege, but also a responsibility. If you want to bring a dog into your life, you must be aware of the commitment that dog ownership entails!!
Training & Education
The Hairless Chihuahua is an intelligent and eager-to-learn companion who, despite its small size, shows remarkable comprehension. Its training should start early and be consistent yet loving to take its sensitive nature into account. Similar to the Labrador, it is important to provide the Hairless Chihuahua with meaningful activities that challenge it mentally without overwhelming it. Due to its close bond with the owner, the Hairless Chihuahua responds particularly well to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Short, varied training sessions are ideal, as its attention span can be limited. Frustration tolerance should be built up gently to prevent insecurities and fears. Although the Hairless Chihuahua is not a classic working dog, it can excel in targeted training areas such as obedience or trick training. It is important that the training is patient and consistent to promote its confident character and avoid unwanted behavior. Overall, the Hairless Chihuahua requires a fine sense of its needs and loving but clear leadership. Those willing to invest time and patience will gain a loyal, alert, and willing-to-learn companion.
Nutrition & Care
The hairless Chihuahua requires special care because it does not have a protective coat. A balanced diet with high-quality food that contains all essential nutrients is essential to promote its health. Make sure to avoid overweight, as the small body can be quickly strained. Since the hairless Chihuahua has no undercoat, the grooming routine is minimal. However, its sensitive skin requires special attention: regular application of suitable skincare products protects against dryness and sunburn. In winter, it is important to protect the dog with a warming sweater or coat, as it has no natural insulation. The hairless Chihuahua adapts well to the Central European climate but requires special protection in cold and strong sunlight. Make sure to keep it away from drafts and, if necessary, provide clothing.

In daily life this can mean
You must protect their skin from the sun in summer and from the cold in winter, check their teeth regularly, and honestly budget for higher veterinary costs.
The breeder's role
Responsible breeders have knees, eyes, and hearts checked, pay attention to clear airways, and selectively breed with coated dogs—though the fundamental risks of this breed cannot be completely eliminated even then.

Experiences with the Chihuahua
