What matters most
Especially with a Bolonka Zwetna (National Breed), choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. History
The Bolonka Zwetna is a relatively young dog breed that originated in the early 1950s in the former Soviet Union, specifically in Leningrad. At that time, the import of dogs from Western countries was strictly limited, prompting Russian cynologists to begin developing their own national toy dog breed. The goal was to breed a robust yet small and adaptable companion dog suitable for urban apartment living. The foundation consisted of small dogs brought into the country by French aristocrats, as well as crosses with breeds such as the Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Toy Poodle, and Pekingese. The name Bolonka Zwetna translates literally from Russian as 'colored lapdog,' referring to its lush, curly coat that appears in many color variations. Initially, the breed enjoyed great popularity primarily in Russia and later in the GDR. To this day, the Bolonka Zwetna is not officially recognized internationally by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). However, it enjoys national recognition by the Russian Kynological Federation (RKF) and in Germany by the Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen (VDH).

Experiences with the Bolonka Zwetna (National Breed)
