What matters most
Especially with a Braque Francais, Type Pyrenees, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Braque Français (type Pyrénées) is a lightning-fast, sensitive Vorstehhund (pointing dog)—bred to tirelessly track game birds in rugged terrain and signal them silently in close cooperation with the hunter. His agility is paired with a sensitivity that makes harsh training methods absolutely off-limits.
Perfect for you if:
- You enjoy intensive scent work, dummy training, or hunting-related activities—this dog needs a job for his mind, as simple walks won't satisfy his hardware.
- You train with a soft voice and positive reinforcement, as this highly sensitive breed will quickly shut down if faced with pressure or harshness.
- You spend a lot of time in nature and can give him the opportunity to safely live out his enormous joy for running and searching.
- You appreciate an affectionate dog at home who, after a hard day's work, prefers to seek close, quiet contact with his humans.
Less ideal if:
- You expect him to ignore game trails in the woods—he was bred to pursue exactly those stimuli at top speed, which requires ironclad recall training.
- You have little time for daily stimulation and are looking for a dog that just tags along in everyday life.
- You live in the middle of the city without quick access to vast, off-leash areas.
The real vibes check
A Braque Français is like a high-performance sports car with extremely sensitive steering—he delivers explosive hunting performance out in the field, but he won't forgive rough handling. If you understand his gentle soul and channel his hunting instincts through smart training, you will get a tireless athlete outdoors and the most cuddly companion indoors.

History
The Braque Français, type Pyrénées, is one of the oldest pointing breeds in France, with roots tracing back to the southwest of the country. The breed's origins date to the 15th century, likely descending from early bird dogs described by Gaston Phoebus. Originally bred exclusively for hunting upland game and small game, the breed became known for its exceptional sense of smell and agility. By the late 19th century, the Braque Français was divided into two distinct types: the larger, heavier Gascogne and the smaller, more agile Pyrénées. The Pyrénées type was specifically selected for the demanding, rugged terrain of the Pyrenees region, resulting in a faster and more nimble pointer. While the breed is recognized as a distinct entity in its French homeland and throughout Europe by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the situation in the United States differs. Contrary to common belief, the Braque Français, type Pyrénées, was not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1997. Instead, it has been listed in the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) since 2001, which represents the first step toward potential full recognition. Today, it remains highly valued as a passionate and enduring hunting dog.
The Braque français, type Pyrénées, was bred as a pointing dog for hunting and is renowned for its agility and keen sense of smell.

Experiences with the Braque Francais, Type Pyrenees
