Relative to other breeds
The Haldenstövare is considered a very robust working breed for which there are currently no specific mandatory genetic tests. Nevertheless, buyers should be aware of breed-typical risks such as hip dysplasia (HD) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), which can occur in scent hounds. Due to the extremely small gene pool, the risk of inbreeding depression is also an important factor to consider when purchasing a puppy.

What matters most
Especially with a Haldenstövare, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →Is the Haldenstövare right for you?
The Haldenstövare is a robust, enduring scent hound—bred for hours of hare hunting in the Norwegian snow, where it works completely independently and with a distinct baying voice. Its nose and hunting instinct are its absolute operating system.
Perfect for you if:
- You use it for hunting or provide it with an extremely demanding alternative task like mantrailing or tracking at the highest level
- You live in a rural area, ideally with a securely fenced garden, and have the vast outdoors right on your doorstep
- You appreciate its independence and don't expect it to constantly seek eye contact with you during walks
- You are looking for a friendly, unobtrusive housemate who just wants to relax after a hard day's work
Less ideal if:
- You expect to be able to let it off-leash in the woods—when it catches a fresh hare trail, this dog switches to autopilot
- You live in an apartment or a densely populated neighborhood, as its deep, far-reaching hunting voice is part of its DNA
- You have little time for extensive exercise in any weather, as it will wither without massive physical exertion
- You are looking for a classic 'will-to-please' and expect quick obedience on the training field
The real vibes check
A Haldenstövare in the woods reads the environment like a newspaper, in which you are at best a footnote. It is not a companion dog for leisurely Sunday strolls, but a highly specialized Norwegian athlete that lives for the trail. If you share its passion for scent work, you will have a gentle, unobtrusive friend at home—if not, you will have a frustrated escape artist on your leash.

History
The history of the Haldenstövare originates in southeastern Norway and is closely linked to the town of Halden, from which the breed takes its name. Targeted breeding of this scent hound began as early as the 1860s. The goal was to create an enduring and robust hunting dog capable of handling the demanding climatic and geographical conditions of Scandinavia. The original and still primary purpose of the Haldenstövare is the persistent hunting of hares and foxes. It works as a classic tracking and scent hound, pursuing game with a clear baying sound, rather than as a retriever. To solidify the desired hunting traits, Norwegian breeders systematically crossed local hunting dogs with imported English, Swedish, and German scent hounds. It was not until the early 20th century, around 1900, that uniform breed characteristics began to stabilize. Despite its excellent hunting qualities and friendly nature, the Haldenstövare has always remained one of the rarer Norwegian dog breeds. Official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale was granted in 1952. To this day, it is valued in its homeland almost exclusively by hunters as a highly specialized working dog and is rarely kept solely as a companion dog.
The Haldenstövare was bred for hare hunting and is characterized by its endurance and keen sense of smell.

Its hunting motivation is strongly pronounced, which can manifest in a pronounced prey drive. Therefore, early training for control and recall is essential. When dealing with strangers, the Haldenstövare is usually reserved but does not show excessive aggression. It is well suited as a family dog if its needs for activity and engagement are met. What Awaits You
The Haldenstövare is a lively and hardworking hunting dog from Sweden. It is characterized by its endurance and pronounced sense of smell. These dogs are intelligent and eager to learn but require consistent training and sufficient activity. The Haldenstövare is especially suitable for active families and hunters looking for a reliable companion in the field.
Housing & Care
Haldenstövare are lively and hardworking dogs that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. They are especially suitable for active people or families who spend a lot of time outdoors and can involve the dog in various activities. Due to their strong hunting and tracking instincts, they need consistent but loving training and clear structures. When dealing with children, Haldenstövare are usually friendly and patient but are better suited for families with older children who can treat the dog with respect. They are generally compatible with other dogs but should be socialized early to ensure harmonious coexistence. Purely keeping a Haldenstövare in an apartment is not ideal; a house with a garden and enough space to run is recommended so the dog can burn off energy and be content. Those who keep a Haldenstövare should plan plenty of time for shared activities and engagement to avoid boredom and unwanted behavior.
Owning a dog is not only a privilege, but also a responsibility. If you want to bring a dog into your life, you must be aware of the commitment that dog ownership entails!!
Training & Education
Haldenstövare are intelligent and eager-to-work dogs that require consistent and varied training. They have a strong herding and protective instinct, which is why it is important to start training early to promote impulse control and frustration tolerance. Haldenstövare learn quickly and are very attentive, making them well-suited for dog sports such as obedience, agility, or mantrailing. Training should always be positive and reward-based to build a trusting bond between you and your dog. Due to their natural drive for movement and eagerness to work, it is important to provide them with sufficient mental and physical activity without overwhelming them. Good socialization and clear rules help control unwanted protective or herding behavior. Haldenstövare are not beginner dogs, as they require a lot of time, patience, and consistency. Those who are willing to channel this energy and intelligence meaningfully will gain a loyal, versatile, and balanced companion.
Nutrition & Care
Haldenstövare: The Haldenstövare is an active and robust hunting dog that requires a balanced diet to maintain its energy and health. High-quality food with a good proportion of proteins and nutrients is important to support its musculature. Be careful to avoid overfeeding, as the Haldenstövare is active but can also tend to become overweight if it does not get enough exercise. The coat of the Haldenstövare is dense and weather-resistant, with a thick undercoat that protects it well from the cold. Regular brushing, at least once a week, helps keep the coat clean and healthy and removes loose hair. During the shedding seasons in spring and autumn, Haldenstövares shed more heavily, so more intensive brushing is recommended then. The Haldenstövare is well adapted to the Central European climate. Its coat protects it from cold and wetness, but in very hot weather, sufficient shade and water should be provided to prevent overheating. Overall, the Haldenstövare needs a lot of exercise and activity to remain balanced and healthy.

Experiences with the Haldenstövare
