History
The history of the Haldenstövare originates in southeastern Norway and is closely linked to the town of Halden, from which the breed takes its name. Targeted breeding of this scent hound began as early as the 1860s. The goal was to create an enduring and robust hunting dog capable of handling the demanding climatic and geographical conditions of Scandinavia. The original and still primary purpose of the Haldenstövare is the persistent hunting of hares and foxes. It works as a classic tracking and scent hound, pursuing game with a clear baying sound, rather than as a retriever. To solidify the desired hunting traits, Norwegian breeders systematically crossed local hunting dogs with imported English, Swedish, and German scent hounds. It was not until the early 20th century, around 1900, that uniform breed characteristics began to stabilize. Despite its excellent hunting qualities and friendly nature, the Haldenstövare has always remained one of the rarer Norwegian dog breeds. Official recognition by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale was granted in 1952. To this day, it is valued in its homeland almost exclusively by hunters as a highly specialized working dog and is rarely kept solely as a companion dog.

Ich nutze meine Haldenstövare-Hündin hauptsächlich für die aktive Jagd auf Rotfuchs und Hase. Im Wald zeigt sie eine unglaubliche Ausdauer und eine hervorragende Nase – sie ist eine echte Arbeitsmaschine, die auch bei eisigen Temperaturen und schwierigem Gelände im norwegischen Winter unermüdlich sucht. Sie ist sehr spursicher und jagt mit einer ehrlichen, feinen Spurlaute, was die Zusammenarbeit ungemein erleichtert. Ein kleiner Schwachpunkt bei ihr ist, dass sie manchmal etwas zu kurz am Bau verweilt, wenn das Raubwild dorthin flüchtet, aber dank moderner GPS-Ortung ist das heute kein echtes Problem mehr.
Zu Hause zeigt sie sich von einer völlig anderen Seite: Sie ist extrem ruhig, ausgeglichen und bellt so gut wie nie, selbst wenn sie draußen im Zwinger ist. Man muss allerdings aufpassen, wenn man sie auf harschem Schnee oder verkrustetem Eis laufen lässt, da die Pfoten trotz ihrer Robustheit Schaden nehmen können. Für mich ist sie die perfekte Kombination aus leidenschaftlichem Jagdhelfer und sanftem Hausgenossen.

Wir haben uns bewusst für einen Haldenstövare entschieden, weil wir eine sehr aktive Familie sind und viel Zeit in der Natur verbringen. Unser Rüde begleitet uns leidenschaftlich gerne beim Skilanglauf, beim Wandern und zieht auch bereitwillig den Schlitten. Er ist unglaublich menschenfreundlich, liebt Kinder und versteht sich prächtig mit anderen Hunden. Drinnen ist er ein absoluter Traum – er liegt entspannt in seinem Körbchen und fordert kaum Aufmerksamkeit ein.
Man darf jedoch nicht vergessen, dass er im Herzen ein eigenständiger Jagdhund bleibt. Ihn einfach ohne Leine im Wald laufen zu lassen, ist wegen seines extremen Jagdtriebs und seiner Unabhängigkeit kaum möglich. Da wir selbst nicht aktiv jagen, lasten wir ihn intensiv mit Fährtentraining und Suchspielen aus. Er ist kein 'Kommando-Roboter' wie ein Schäferhund, sondern bewahrt sich immer seinen eigenen Kopf, lässt sich aber mit positiver Verstärkung und Leckerlis sehr gut führen.

Als Liebhaber seltener nordischer Rassen war es mir ein großes Anliegen, zum Erhalt dieser vom Aussterben bedrohten norwegischen Nationalrasse beizutragen. Es war gar nicht so leicht, überhaupt einen Welpen zu bekommen, da jährlich oft nur zwischen 10 und 20 Welpen im norwegischen Hundeverband registriert werden. Der extrem kleine Genpool ist natürlich eine ständige Sorge in der Zuchtgemeinschaft, weshalb man bei der Verpaarung extrem vorsichtig sein muss.
Gesundheitlich ist meine Hündin jedoch absolut robust. Die Rasse gilt als sehr gesund, abgesehen von vereinzelten Fällen von leichter Hüftdysplasie (HD). Ihr Fell ist extrem pflegeleicht, schmutzabweisend und wetterfest. Sie hat ein unglaublich stabiles Nervenkostüm, ist absolut nervenstark und geht offen auf alles Neue zu. Wer einen unkomplizierten, wesensstarken Hund sucht und bereit ist, ihm die nötige Bewegung im Freien zu bieten, findet hier einen treuen Begleiter fürs Leben.
