Als wir uns für unseren Castro-Laboreiro-Rüden entschieden haben, wussten wir, dass wir keinen typischen 'Will-to-Please'-Hund bekommen. Und das hat sich absolut bestätigt. Er ist seiner Familie gegenüber unglaublich loyal, verschmust und anhänglich, aber Fremde braucht er einfach nicht. Er lässt sich von Fremden zwar anfassen, zeigt aber deutlich, dass er darauf verzichten kann. Durch seinen sehr ernsten, fast grimmigen Gesichtsausdruck wechseln Passanten beim Spazierengehen ohnehin gerne mal die Straßenseite.
Was uns täglich begeistert, ist seine absolute Geruchslosigkeit. Selbst wenn er klitschenass vom Regen reinkommt, riecht er überhaupt nicht nach nassem Hund. Sein Fell ist extrem schmutzabweisend – einmal schütteln, und der getrocknete Dreck ist weg. Beim Thema Beschäftigung muss man allerdings umdenken: Klassisches Apportieren oder Bällchenwerfen ödet ihn nach zwei Versuchen an. Er spart seine Kräfte lieber für wichtigere Dinge auf.
Da er als Herdenschutzhund eigenständig arbeiten und mitdenken will, haben wir mit dem Mantrailing angefangen. Das lastet ihn geistig perfekt aus, ohne ihn körperlich zu überfordern. Hektische Spiele oder hyperaktive Artgenossen meidet er übrigens komplett – das passt einfach nicht zu seinem absolut souveränen und ruhigen Gemüt.

Ich erlebe diese seltene Rasse aktuell über unsere Tierschutzarbeit und kann nur betonen: Der Castro Laboreiro ist absolut kein Hund für Anfänger oder Menschen, die einen 'fertigen' Hund auf Knopfdruck erwarten. Unser Rüde wurde unüberlegt im Internet bestellt, kam in eine Familie und wurde schnell abgeschoben, weil er eben nicht sofort funktionierte, sondern rassetypisch anfing, Haus und Hof eigenständig zu bewachen.
Er ist im Grunde ein extrem treuer, kinderlieber Kerl, der sich hervorragend mit anderen Hunden versteht und wahnsinnig gerne lernt. Aber er braucht eine sehr konsequente, erfahrene Führung. Fremden gegenüber ist er anfangs misstrauisch und zieht sich zurück. Erst wenn er merkt, dass ich als 'Rudelführer' die Situation voll im Griff habe, kann er sich entspannen und die Verantwortung abgeben.
Für diese Hunde ist ein Zuhause mit einem sicher eingezäunten Garten im ländlichen Raum ideal. Sie wollen patrouillieren und aufpassen, brauchen aber gleichzeitig den engen Familienanschluss im Haus. Eine Zwingerhaltung ist für ihre sensible, treue Seele absolut tabu.

Wer sich einen Castro Laboreiro ins Haus holt, muss sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass dieser Hund keinen Kadavergehorsam besitzt. Er wurde im Norden Portugals gezüchtet, um Herden völlig eigenständig vor Wölfen zu schützen. Diese Selbstständigkeit spüren wir jeden Tag. Wenn man ihm mit Druck, Härte oder gar Gewalt begegnet, schaltet er komplett stur und verweigert die Zusammenarbeit. Nur mit liebevoller Konsequenz und echtem Respekt erkennt er uns als Führung an.
Was man unbedingt wissen sollte: Sein Bellen ist sehr speziell. Es fängt tief an und geht dann in ein langgezogenes, fast wolfsähnliches Heulen über. Er bellt zwar nicht ohne Grund, aber wenn er anschlägt, ist das extrem laut und eindringlich. Das sollte man wegen der Nachbarschaft im Hinterkopf behalten.
Er ist ein sehr ruhiger und ausgeglichener Hausgenosse, der im Alltag wenig Ansprüche stellt und erstaunlich gut mit unseren anderen Hoftieren harmoniert. Trotz seiner Gelassenheit braucht er aber ausreichend Bewegung und vor allem Kopfarbeit, um nicht auf dumme Gedanken zu kommen und eigene, unerwünschte Entscheidungen zu treffen.
