The Hrvatski Ovcar, also known as the Croatian Shepherd, is a medium-sized dog with a stocky and muscular build. Its fur is short, thick and has a dense undercoat that protects it from extreme weather conditions. The coat color is consistently black, with occasional white markings on the chest and paws being tolerated. Its head is proportional to the body with a pronounced stop, medium-sized ears that stand erect, and dark, almond-shaped eyes that exude a deep intelligence and alertness. The Hrvatski Ovcar is listed in FCI Group 1: Herding Dogs and Cattle Dogs (excluding Swiss Mountain Dogs), Section 1: Shepherd Dogs. In contrast to many other dog breeds, the Hrvatski Ovcar does not differentiate between performance lines and show lines, as the breed is bred primarily for its suitability for work.

History
The Hrvatski Ovcar is an ancient dog breed that originated in Croatia. The exact history of the breed is unknown, but it is believed that it originates from the local dogs that have been kept as working dogs by Croatian farmers and shepherds for centuries. The breed was first introduced in 1935 by veterinarian Dr. Stjepan Romic, who gave the dogs the name "Hrvatski Ovcar" gave what in German was "Croatian Shepherd" means. The breed was officially recognized by the F"d"ration Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1969. Today the Hrvatski Ovcar is known and valued in Croatia and parts of Europe as a valuable working dog and reliable family dog.
