Breed Profile
Phalene: The Phalene, also known as the "butterfly dog," is a small, elegant dog breed that belongs to FCI Group 9, Section 5 (Companion and Toy Dogs). Unlike the closely related Papillon, whose ears stand upright, the Phalene's ears are usually hanging or semi-erect. The body is compact and lightly built, with a silky, mostly long-haired coat that comes in various color combinations. Phalenes are lively, intelligent, and very affectionate, making them excellent companion dogs. History
The history of the Phalène, also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, dates back to the 16th century. Originally in Europe, especially in France and Belgium, this small spaniel breed was valued as a companion dog of the nobility. Its name "Phalène" means "moth dog" and refers to the characteristically drooping ears that resemble fluttering moths. In the 19th century, the breed was further developed and acquired its current form through selective breeding. The Phalène is closely related to the Papillon, which has upright ears. Today, the Phalène is mainly kept as a loving family and show dog.
The Phalène is the original variant of the Papillon and was bred as a companion dog for the nobility.

It loves spending time with its people and is both playful and affectionate. Phalènes are very eager to learn and benefit from varied training that offers both mental and physical challenges. They are well suited for dog sports such as agility or scent work, where their keen sense and quick comprehension particularly come into play. Due to their sensitivity, they respond well to loving but consistent training. Although they are not classic guard dogs, Phalènes have a watchful nature and reliably alert to strangers. Their prey drive is moderately developed, which makes impulse control training easier. They are ideal family dogs that also feel comfortable in apartments, as long as they receive sufficient activity and attention. Without enough exercise, they can quickly become bored and restless.

Training & Education
Phalenes are intelligent and eager-to-learn dogs that require loving and consistent training. They show a high adaptability and benefit from varied training that offers both mental and physical challenges. Due to their watchful and attentive nature, they are well suited for dog sports such as obedience or rally obedience, where they can demonstrate their concentration and obedience. It is important to make the training positive and patient in order to build a trusting bond. Phalenes react sensitively to harsh methods, so praise and rewards are the key to success. Early socialization helps to reinforce their friendly nature and reduce any fears. Since Phalenes are naturally lively, they should be mentally challenged regularly to avoid boredom and unwanted behavior. At the same time, it is important to also allow them rest periods so that they remain balanced. Overall, the Phalene is a grateful and motivated student who grows into a pleasant and versatile companion with loving, varied training.
Nutrition & Care
Phalenes are small, lively dogs with silky, long fur that requires regular care. A balanced diet with high-quality food containing all essential nutrients is important to maintain their energy and health. Due to their size and activity, it is advisable to monitor an appropriate amount of food to avoid overweight. The Phalene's coat requires regular brushing, ideally several times a week, to prevent matting and keep the coat shiny. Especially during the shedding seasons in spring and autumn, increased coat care is necessary. Phalenes are sensitive to extreme weather conditions; their coat protects them well from the cold, but in great heat, sufficient shade and water should be provided.
