Wir haben unseren Rüden über eine Tierrettung adoptiert, die französische Laufhunde nach Deutschland vermittelt. Mit seinen stolzen 72 cm Schulterhöhe ist er eine echte Erscheinung. Im Haus ist er ein absoluter Traum: unglaublich anhänglich, verschmust und tiefenentspannt. Er liebt unsere Kinder heiß und innig, auch wenn er in seiner Freude manchmal etwas stürmisch und überschwänglich sein kann.
Die große Herausforderung ist ganz klar sein enormer Bewegungsdrang und sein Erbe als Meutehund. Draußen ist er ein reiner Sicht- und Geruchsjäger. Sobald wir die Haustür öffnen, klebt seine Nase am Boden und er ist in seiner eigenen Welt. Ohne Leine laufen lassen ist im Wald absolut unmöglich. Zudem mussten wir anfangs im Freilauf mit anderen Hunden gut aufpassen: Mit großen Hunden klappt es super, aber bei sehr kleinen, schwächeren Hunden neigt er dazu, seine Kraft etwas zu sehr auszuspielen. Wer sich diesen Hund ins Haus holt, muss bereit sein, täglich viel Zeit in Auslauf und geistige Beschäftigung wie Fährtenarbeit zu investieren.

Als aktiver Jäger habe ich mich bewusst für die kleinere Variante, den Petit Gascon Saintongeois, entschieden. Bei der Jagd auf Hasen und Hochwild zeigt sie eine unbändige Passion, eine exzellente Nase und ein wunderschönes, klangvolles Geläut. Sie arbeitet extrem beharrlich und ausdauernd, lässt sich im Jagdbetrieb aber dennoch erstaunlich gut führen und ordnet sich problemlos unter.
Man darf diese Rasse aber auf keinen Fall unterschätzen: Es sind Vollblut-Jagdhunde, die arbeiten müssen. Ein reines Leben als Begleithund im Körbchen würde sie unglücklich machen. Wer keinen Jagdschein hat, muss zwingend für adäquaten Ersatz sorgen. Zudem ist die Rasse außerhalb Frankreichs extrem selten – man muss viel Geduld mitbringen, um überhaupt einen seriösen Züchter zu finden. Gesundheitlich ist sie dafür extrem robust und pflegeleicht.

Ich führe meinen Grand Gascon Saintongeois nicht jagdlich, lasse ihn aber intensiv mantrailen, um seinen ausgeprägten Spurwillen umzulenken. Im Haus ist er ein sanfter Riese, der Besucher freundlich und völlig ohne Schutztrieb begrüßt. Er ist extrem sozialverträglich, da er genetisch als Meutehund auf Kooperation gepolt ist. Das kurze Fell ist zudem sehr pflegeleicht.
Allerdings erfordert die Haltung im Alltag eiserne Konsequenz. Der Jagdtrieb ist tief verwurzelt, und man braucht viel Erfahrung mit eigenständigen Laufhunden, um das Freilauf-Management im Griff zu haben. Einfach mal so entspannt im Wald spazieren gehen ist nicht drin – man muss immer hellwach sein. Mindestens zwei Stunden aktive Bewegung und Kopfarbeit am Tag sind für uns Pflicht, damit er ausgelastet bleibt.
