The Cesky Fousek is a very robust hunting breed with an extremely low genetic disease burden. Hip dysplasia (HD) is the only significant concern regarding the musculoskeletal system, but it is effectively managed through mandatory health tests within the breeding program. Since other typical hereditary diseases play virtually no role in this breed, the risk for buyers is very manageable.

What matters most
Especially with a Cesky Fousek, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Cesky Fousek is a resilient, wire-haired Vorstehhund (pointing dog) — bred for versatile and demanding hunting in fields, forests, and water, where he works with sharp intelligence and an extreme willingness to cooperate.
Perfect for you if:
- You incorporate challenging scent work or Apportierarbeit (retrieving work) into your daily routine — as a versatile hunting dog, he needs a real job, as simple walks are nowhere near enough to satisfy his genetics.
- You live in a rural area, ideally with direct access to vast natural landscapes or bodies of water, and can provide the space he needs for his expansive movement.
- You enjoy being outdoors for hours in any weather and aren't bothered by his coarse, dirt-trapping coat after a trip through the underbrush.
- You offer clear but sensitive guidance, allowing him to act as a true partner on equal footing and think for himself.
Less ideal if:
- You expect him to simply ignore tempting wildlife scents in the forest — he was bred to find and point game, which can mean constant management on a long leash in everyday life.
- You are looking for a pure companion dog for city life who is satisfied with three leisurely laps around the block and a bit of ball throwing.
- You have to leave him alone for hours on weekdays regularly — this dog forms an extremely close bond with his owner and will wither without real family connection.
The real vibes check
A Cesky Fousek is not a decorative companion for a street café, but a bearded outdoorsman in constant work mode. When he suddenly freezes and points in a field, you can feel his centuries-old breeding history, which demands your leadership in that moment. You aren't getting a dog that just tags along, but a highly qualified colleague who needs you as a partner for real tasks.
Breed Profile
The Cesky Fousek, also known as the Bohemian Wirehaired Pointer, is an impressive sight. Its medium-sized, robust build demonstrates endurance and strength, while its wiry, medium-length coat protects it from the elements. Its undercoat is particularly dense, making it an excellent working dog in cold climates. His bushy eyebrows and distinctive beard, which give his face a dignified, almost human-like expression, are particularly characteristic. He belongs to FCI Group 7, which includes pointers. The breed is known for its abilities in the field, woods and water, making them versatile hunting dogs. There are no significant differences between show and working lines for this breed, as the breed standard takes into account both external appearance and working characteristics.

History
The Cesky Fousek's roots date back to the Middle Ages, when it was valued as an all-round hunting dog in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. However, after World War I the breed was almost extinct and efforts were made to revitalize it. The modern form of the Cesky Fousek was developed through targeted breeding programs that focused on dogs that had both high working performance and good temperament. The breed was officially recognized by the FCI (F"d"ration Cynologique Internationale) in 1965. Today the Cesky Fousek is valued both in its home country and internationally as an excellent hunting and family dog.
The Český Fousek was bred as a versatile hunting dog for field and water hunting and is known for its wiry coat and willingness to work.

Experiences with the Cesky Fousek
