Relative to other breeds
The Hygenhund is considered a robust working breed for which there are currently no specific mandatory genetic tests. Nevertheless, prospective buyers should be mindful of conditions common in larger scenthounds, such as hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED), as these joint issues can occur if selective breeding is neglected. Additionally, due to the breed's characteristic pendulous ears, they are prone to painful ear infections.

What matters most
Especially with a Hygen Hound, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →Is the Hygen Hound right for you?
The Hygenhund is a robust, extremely energetic Norwegian hunter—a tireless scenthound and specialist in tracking by voice, bred to work independently for hours in rugged terrain.
Perfect for you if:
- You are an active hunter or can offer him a genuine, demanding substitute job through intensive mantrailing and extensive tracking work.
- You live in a rural area and ideally have a well-secured garden where he can relax in any weather after his work.
- You spend hours outdoors in absolutely any weather and possess a high level of physical stamina yourself.
- You provide confident, patient leadership and appreciate his Nordic independence rather than demanding absolute, blind obedience.
Less ideal if:
- You expect him to remain immediately recallable at the sight of game or a fresh trail—his genetics tell him to go full throttle and make noise exactly then.
- You live in a noisy environment or a densely populated city—as a specialist in tracking by voice, he enjoys communicating loudly and piercingly when excited.
- You have to leave him alone in an apartment for hours every day, where he will quickly develop his own destructive hobbies out of sheer under-stimulation.
The real vibes check
A Hygenhund is like a tireless Norwegian lumberjack: he needs a clear mission, dirt on his paws, and vast open spaces to be truly happy. If you try to force this passionate specialist into the tight corset of a pure family dog, he will rebel out of frustration. However, if you give his nose a real job, you will gain a fascinatingly loyal and, indoors, perfectly balanced partner.

History
The history of the Hygen dog, also called Hygen Bracke, begins at the beginning of the 20th century in Norway. Named after the Norwegian hunter and breeder Hygen, this Bracke was specially developed for hunting in the demanding Scandinavian forests. The goal was to create a versatile, enduring, and agile hunting dog that works reliably both in tracking wounded game and in locating wild animals. Through targeted crossbreeding with other Bracke breeds, a robust and intelligent breed was created, which is particularly distinguished by its excellent nose and pronounced hunting instinct. Today, the Hygen dog is especially known in Norway as a valued hunting companion.

Training & Education
The Hygen dog is an intelligent and eager-to-work hunting dog that requires consistent and patient training. Similar to the German Shepherd, it is important to specifically promote its natural instincts and pronounced sense of smell without overwhelming it. The Hygen dog shows a high willingness to learn and is well suited for hunting tasks, tracking work, and other dog sports that challenge its nose and willingness to work. Training should be varied and positive to maintain the dog's motivation. Frustration tolerance and impulse control are important aspects that should be practiced early to avoid unwanted behavior. As with the Labrador, it is advisable to allow the Hygen dog rest periods and not keep it constantly occupied. Good socialization and a close bond between dog and owner are crucial for the Hygen dog to grow into a balanced and reliable companion. Those willing to invest time and commitment in training will gain a versatile, eager-to-learn, and loyal partner.
Nutrition & Care
Hygenhund (Hygen-Bracke): The diet of the Hygenhund should be balanced and nutrient-rich to support its energy and endurance. High-quality food with a good proportion of proteins is important, as this breed is active and athletic. Be careful to avoid overfeeding to prevent overweight. The coat of the Hygenhund is short to medium length and dense, with a weather-resistant structure that protects it well from cold and wet. Regular brushing, about once a week, is sufficient to remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. During the shedding season in spring and autumn, increased shedding can occur, making more intensive brushing advisable. The Hygenhund is well adapted to the Central European climate. Its coat protects it from cold, but in very hot weather, sufficient shade and water should be provided to avoid overheating. Regular exercise and mental stimulation are also important for this active breed.

Experiences with the Hygen Hound
