They were used for a variety of tasks including herding livestock, guarding the farm, and hunting rodents and small game. Despite their long history, wheatens were relatively unknown outside of Ireland until they were exported to the United States and other parts of Europe in the 20th century. Since then, the breed has gained popularity worldwide, not least because of its friendly nature and versatility.

Wheatens have a strong hunting instinct, which comes from their past as all-around farm dogs. This can lead to a tendency for them to chase small animals when walking and it may be necessary to keep them on a leash in unsafe areas. However, despite their hunting instincts, they are not aggressive and generally get along well with other dogs. As for alertness, Wheatens are alert and can make good watchdogs, although they are not overly suspicious or aggressive toward strangers. They are more likely to indicate that someone is there than to react aggressively.
