Als ich meinen Rüden vor ein paar Jahren zu mir holte, wusste ich zwar, dass Jonangis gerne graben – aber das Ausmaß hat mich doch überrascht! Er baut sich im Garten regelrechte tiefe Schlafgruben, in denen er sich sichtlich wohler fühlt als in jedem teuren Hundebett. Wer einen perfekt gepflegten englischen Rasen will, sollte sich diese Rasse definitiv nicht anschaffen.
Ein weiteres Highlight ist seine Stimme: Er bellt fast nie, sondern gibt stattdessen diese urkomischen, jodelnden Laute von sich, wenn er sich freut oder Aufmerksamkeit will. Fremden gegenüber ist er extrem reserviert und wachsam, aber für mich tut er alles. Er ist ein absoluter Ein-Personen-Hund.
Man muss allerdings wissen, dass er absolut keine Kälte verträgt. Sein Fell ist so extrem kurz, dass im Winter ohne Hundemantel gar nichts geht. Insgesamt ein faszinierender, urtypischer Begleiter, der aber eine konsequente Hand und Humor für seine Eigenheiten braucht.

Meine Hündin ist ein echtes Energiebündel. Da die Rasse in Indien traditionell zum Hüten von Enten eingesetzt wurde, hat sie einen enormen Bewegungsdrang und reagiert stark auf Vögel und Wildtiere. Einfaches Spazierengehen reicht ihr nicht – wir machen viel Agility und Apportierspiele, um sie geistig auszulasten. Wenn sie ausgepowert ist, ist sie im Haus aber erstaunlich ruhig und ausgeglichen.
Ihr Fell ist ein Traum für alle, die keine Lust auf ständiges Bürsten haben: Es ist so kurz und fein, dass man fast die Haut durchschimmern sieht. Sie haart kaum und riecht auch nicht typisch nach Hund.
Allerdings ist sie draußen sehr eigenständig. Der Jagd- und Hütetrieb ist tief verwurzelt, weshalb der Rückruf im Freilauf eine echte Lebensaufgabe ist. Man darf bei dieser Rasse keinen Kadavergehorsam erwarten, sondern muss mit ihrer Unabhängigkeit arbeiten.

Ich habe mich bewusst für einen Jonangi entschieden, weil ich die ursprünglichen Rassen schätze. Er ist extrem wachsam und hat ein feines Gespür für sein Territorium. Er ist absolut kein Hund, der jeden Besucher schwanzwedelnd begrüßt – im Gegenteil, er ist misstrauisch und beobachtet Fremde genau, ohne dabei ohne Grund aggressiv zu werden.
In der Erziehung braucht man viel Geduld. Er lernt zwar unglaublich schnell, weil er intelligent ist, besitzt aber keinen angeborenen "Will-to-Please". Wenn er einen Sinn in einer Übung sieht, macht er toll mit, ansonsten hinterfragt er Befehle auch gerne mal.
Für mich ist er der treueste Partner, den man sich vorstellen kann, aber man muss mit seinem starken Charakter umgehen können. Er ist kein Anfängerhund und braucht eine klare, liebevolle Führung.
