Wir haben uns direkt zwei Khala Medios geholt, da man uns sagte, dass sich diese nackten Urhunde in Gesellschaft von Artgenossen am wohlsten fühlen. Und es stimmt wirklich: Die beiden sind absolut rudelorientiert, identifizieren sich stark miteinander und sind im Haus unzertrennlich. Zu uns als Familie sind sie unglaublich anhänglich, sanft und liebevoll.
Fremden gegenüber zeigen sie sich allerdings extrem distanziert und fast schon unnahbar. Da war von Anfang an viel Geduld und eine sehr gründliche Sozialisierung nötig. Man muss auch wissen, dass sie bei Konflikten mit anderen Hunden sofort den Rückzug antreten. Da sie genetisch bedingt kaum Zähne haben und ihnen der Schutz durch Fell fehlt, flüchten sie lieber, als sich auf einen Kampf einzulassen. Für uns ist das völlig in Ordnung, aber man muss im Alltag eben vorausschauend agieren.

Unser Khala Grande ist ein echter Windhund-Typ – hochbeinig, elegant und mit einem enormen Bewegungsdrang. Er ist ein leidenschaftlicher Läufer und Herumstreuner im Herzen. Wenn er nicht täglich mindestens eine Stunde intensiven Auslauf bekommt, bei dem er sich richtig auspowern kann, fängt er an, im Haus unruhig zu werden und neigt dazu, Dinge anzuknabbern oder im Garten zu graben.
Man darf die Sturheit dieser Hunde absolut nicht unterschätzen. Er ist extrem intelligent, hinterfragt aber auch gerne mal Befehle und zeigt einen starken eigenen Willen. Für Anfänger ist die Rasse meiner Meinung nach nichts, da man eine sehr konsequente, aber gleichzeitig sanfte Führung bei der Erziehung braucht. Wenn man sich darauf einlässt und seine Energie in die richtigen Bahnen lenkt, hat man einen treuen und faszinierenden Partner an seiner Seite.

Die Hautpflege ist bei unserem Khala das A und O. Da er kein Fell hat, müssen wir ihn im Sommer penibel mit Sonnencreme vor UV-Strahlung schützen, und im Winter geht ohne warmen Hundemantel gar nichts. Wir baden ihn regelmäßig mit einem ganz milden, unparfümierten Shampoo, um Hautirritationen vorzubeugen, und müssen seine empfindliche Haut immer gut im Blick behalten.
Eine weitere Besonderheit sind seine Krallen: Sie wachsen extrem schnell und erinnern fast schon an Greifvogel-Klauen. Wenn man die nicht regelmäßig kürzt, wird das Laufen für ihn schnell unangenehm. Er ist ein sensibler, aber absolut liebenswerter Hund. Eine lustige Eigenart von ihm ist, dass er bei plötzlichem Erschrecken manchmal komplett einfriert und sich sekundenlang nicht mehr bewegt. Man braucht definitiv Erfahrung mit Hunden, aber die Mühe lohnt sich.
