Als aktiver Jäger habe ich mir meinen Rüden direkt aus Frankreich geholt. Wer einen Grand Gascon Saintongeois jagdlich führt, weiß, was für ein Juwel er auf der Fährte ist. Seine Nase ist phänomenal, und wenn er mit seinem tiefen, klangvollen Geläut die Spur aufnimmt, ist das für jeden Hundeführer ein Gänsehautmoment. Er arbeitet unglaublich ausdauernd und zeigt bei der Arbeit auf Hochwild einen enormen Finderwillen.
Im Jagdbetrieb ist er hochkonzentriert und trifft selbstständige Entscheidungen. Das bedeutet aber auch, dass er im Alltag eine konsequente Führung braucht. Ein reiner Befehlsempfänger ist er nicht; er hinterfragt Dinge, wenn er keinen Sinn darin sieht. Nach der Jagd ist er im Haus jedoch das komplette Gegenteil: extrem ruhig, anhänglich und sensibel. Er liebt den engen Kontakt zu seiner Familie und fordert seine Streicheleinheiten regelrecht ein.
Man darf die Rasse aber keinesfalls unterschätzen. Unsere Hündin kam über eine Tierschutzorganisation aus Frankreich zu uns. Viele dieser wunderbaren Meutehunde landen dort im Tierheim, weil sie für die Jäger nicht mehr tauglich sind oder nach der Jagd zurückgelassen wurden. Als sie bei uns einzog, war sie anfangs sehr sensibel und fast ein wenig schüchtern, hat sich aber unglaublich schnell an das Leben im Haus gewöhnt. Sie ist stubenrein, kann problemlos mal alleine bleiben und ist im Haus eine absolut sanfte, verschmuste Seele.
Die größte Herausforderung im Alltag ist ganz klar ihr extrem ausgeprägter Jagdtrieb. Sobald wir die Haustür verlassen, geht ihre Nase auf den Boden und sie ist in ihrer eigenen Welt. Freilauf ist bei uns im waldreichen Westerwald absolut unmöglich – sie würde sofort jeder Fährte kilometerweit folgen. Wir sichern sie daher konsequent mit der Schleppleine.
Um ihrem enormen Laufbedürfnis und ihrem hellwachen Kopf gerecht zu werden, machen wir intensiv Mantrailing. Es ist faszinierend zu sehen, mit welchem Eifer und welcher Ausdauer sie sucht. Wer sich einen Grand Gascon Saintongeois ins Haus holt, muss sich darüber im Klaren sein, dass man einen passionierten Spezialisten adoptiert. Als reiner Mitläufer für gemütliche Runden im Park ist diese Rasse absolut ungeeignet.

Mein Rüde ist mit seinen 72 cm Schulterhöhe eine echte Erscheinung und zieht beim Spazierengehen viele Blicke auf sich. Er ist ein extrem eleganter, aber eben auch sehr kraftvoller Hund. Wir nutzen ihn nicht für die Jagd, lasten ihn aber täglich sportlich aus. Ohne zwei bis drei Stunden intensive Bewegung und zusätzliche Kopfarbeit am Tag ist er nicht ausgelastet.
Im Umgang mit anderen Hunden zeigt er sich grundsätzlich sehr sozial und verträglich, vor allem mit Hündinnen und ähnlich großen Hunden. Allerdings haben wir gemerkt, dass er im Freilauf dazu neigt, seine körperliche Überlegenheit auszunutzen. Er versucht manchmal, schwächere oder kleinere Hunde auszutricksen und lässt dann seine enorme Kraft spielen. Da muss man als Halter sehr vorausschauend agieren und im Zweifelsfall rechtzeitig eingreifen, damit das Spiel nicht kippt.
Die Erziehung erfordert viel Geduld. Er lernt zwar extrem schnell und ist dem Menschen gegenüber sehr liebevoll und anhänglich, bringt aber die typische Eigenständigkeit eines Laufhundes mit. Er entscheidet gern selbst, ob sich ein Kommando gerade lohnt. Für sportliche Menschen, die bereit sind, viel Zeit in die Auslastung und eine konsequente, aber liebevolle Erziehung zu stecken, ist er ein Traumhund.
