Relative to other breeds
Since there are no specific mandatory genetic tests registered for this rare French breed, buyers need to be particularly diligent. As is typical for large scenthounds, there is a risk of hip dysplasia (HD) and the dangerous condition of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), which is why parents should always be hip-scored. Additionally, their long, pendulous ears require regular care to prevent chronic ear infections.

What matters most
Especially with a Grand Gascon Saintongeois, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is an imposing, tireless pack hound—bred for long-distance hunting of hoofed game, equipped with a superior sense of smell and a deeply rooted need for tracking and pack companionship.
Perfect for you if:
- You have hunting ambitions or can offer demanding blood tracking and scent work—simple walks are not enough to tire out this Laufhund (scenthound) hardware.
- You live in a rural area with a high-fenced property where his wide-ranging radius is not an issue.
- Ideally, you already have other dogs, as this classic pack hound will quickly wither away if kept as a solitary dog.
- You lead with calm confidence and patience, as this Frenchman will shut down or become stubborn if you apply pressure or harshness.
Less ideal if:
- You expect a dog that remains reliably recallable in the woods—once he picks up a fresh scent, he decides independently and loudly.
- You live in a densely populated neighborhood where his powerful, deep baying (barking) will quickly lead to conflicts.
- You work full-time and would have to leave him alone for hours, which completely contradicts his extreme need for pack bonding.
The real vibes check
A Grand Gascon Saintongeois is not a companion dog for a Sunday stroll, but a highly specialized athlete whose nose is his compass. When he lowers his head in the woods and begins his deep baying, he belongs entirely to the trail—and you are merely his support staff. If you love and can manage this majestic independence, you will gain a deeply loyal partner; if you are looking for blind obedience, you will be driven to despair.

Experiences with the Grand Gascon Saintongeois
