Although the Rafeiro do Alentejo has been known as a working dog in the Alentejo for centuries, it was only recognized as a separate breed in the mid-20th century. In 1953 the first breed standard was established and in 1957 the breed was officially recognized by the Portuguese Kennel Club. Today the Rafeiro do Alentejo is relatively widespread in Portugal, but it is still rare to find outside of its home country.
