History
The Mast"n del Pirineo has a long history and originates from the Spanish Pyrenees. It was originally bred to protect livestock herds from predators such as wolves and bears. Its size and strength made it particularly well suited to this task. The Mast"n del Pirineo was also used as a guard dog for homes and properties. The breed has been mentioned in documents since the Middle Ages, but it may be even older. The breed was officially recognized by the FCI in 1977.
