Health grade
Relative to other breeds
As a designer dog, the Aussiedoodle is not subject to strict kennel club oversight, which is why buyers must carefully verify the health tests of the parent dogs themselves. There is a real risk of hereditary conditions from both parent breeds, such as the MDR1 gene defect (drug sensitivity), Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), and hip dysplasia (HD). These health issues can only be reliably ruled out through targeted, mandatory health tests of the parent dogs.

What matters most
Especially with a Aussiedoodle, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →Is the Aussiedoodle right for you?
The Aussiedoodle is a highly intelligent and often reactive mix—a genetic grab bag of a controlling Hütehund (herding dog) and a cooperative Apportierhund (retriever). You aren't getting a standardized companion, but rather a surprise package consisting of two extremely work-oriented operating systems.
Perfect for you if:
- You are looking for a dog for demanding mental stimulation and active training—both parent breeds were bred for persistent, close cooperation.
- You have the confidence to enforce clear rest periods for a dog that finds it difficult to switch off on its own.
- You live in an environment that isn't constantly overstimulated, so that the Hütehund portion doesn't remain permanently on edge.
- You offer a structured daily routine that provides this highly sensitive mix with absolute security and predictability.
Less ideal if:
- You expect an easy-care, self-training family dog just because it looks like a teddy bear—the Hütehund portion often brings a strong urge to control.
- You get nervous quickly when a dog reacts to movement stimuli like running children or cyclists and tries to herd them.
- You have to leave him alone for long periods on weekdays—this crossbreed bonds extremely closely with its humans and becomes frustrated quickly when isolated.
The real vibes check
An Aussiedoodle looks like a cuddly stuffed animal, but has the mental engine of a high-performance athlete under those curls. If you're unlucky, he combines the sensitivity of the Poodle with the reactive sharpness of the Aussie—which, with inconsistent training, quickly turns him into a stressed controller of your household. You aren't buying a finished breed, but a demanding project that becomes brilliant with the right guidance, but extremely exhausting without a job to do.
Breed Profile

The Aussiedoodle has a medium-sized, athletic build, often with wavy or curly fur that can come in various colors. Characteristic are its expressive eyes and mobile ears, which reflect its attention and curiosity. Training & Education
Aussiedoodles are intelligent and eager-to-learn dogs that combine the working enthusiasm of the Australian Shepherd with the adaptability of the Poodle. They require varied and meaningful activities to fully realize their potential. Fetch games, mental challenges, and dog sports such as obedience or agility are excellent for stimulating their mind and body. It is important that training is positive and reward-based, as Aussiedoodles can be sensitive to harsh methods. They benefit from clear structures, but also from flexibility and fun in training. Frustration tolerance should be encouraged early so they learn to remain calm and focused even in challenging situations. Due to their social and friendly nature, Aussiedoodles form a close bond with their humans and enjoy working as a team. At the same time, it is important to give them enough rest periods so they do not become overexcited or restless. With the right support and consistent training, they develop into balanced, versatile companions who can excel both in everyday life and in dog sports.
Nutrition & Care
Aussiedoodles are intelligent and active dogs that require a balanced diet to stay healthy and fit. High-quality food with a good proportion of proteins and essential nutrients supports their energy and promotes the health of their skin and coat. Make sure to adjust the amount of food according to their activity level to avoid overweight. The coat of the Aussiedoodle is usually wavy to curly and may shed more or less depending on the parent breed. Regular brushing, ideally 2-3 times a week, helps prevent matting and keeps the coat clean. Increased shedding can occur during the coat change, in which case more intensive brushing is advisable. Aussiedoodles adapt well to the Central European climate. Their coat protects them from the cold, but in extreme heat, sufficient shade and water should be provided to prevent overheating.
| Care Level | |
| Exercise Needs | |
| Shedding Barely any shedding — occasional vacuuming is enough. | Minimal |
| Trainability Bred to work closely alongside humans. | Highly trainable |

Experiences with the Aussiedoodle
