History
The roots of the South Russian Ovtcharka go back a long way and the exact history of its development is not documented. It is believed to have evolved from a variety of herding and livestock guardian dogs in southern Russia and possibly Ukraine. As such, it has a long tradition of guarding flocks of sheep against predators and as a guard dog for farms and families.
