Although there are few official genetic tests available for the Perro Dogo Mallorquin, this heavy molosser breed struggles with typical joint issues such as hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED). Furthermore, as a deep-chested breed, they are at an increased risk for life-threatening gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Buyers should be cautious if they cannot see independent veterinary proof of the parents' health, as there are hardly any controlled breeding structures in place.

What matters most
Especially with a Perro Dogo Mallorquin, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
A Mallorca-Dogge acts like an experienced bouncer: it makes no noise, rarely barks, and doesn't threaten unnecessarily, but anyone who tries to get past it uninvited will hit a wall of muscle and determination. You aren't getting a carefree entertainer, but a serious, deeply loyal bodyguard whose respect and cooperation you must earn through absolute inner calm.
The Perro Dogo Mallorquin, also called Ca de Bou, is a robust and powerful dog breed from the island of Mallorca. The history of the Perro Dogo Mallorquin begins on the Spanish island of Mallorca, where it has been valued for centuries as a strong and brave guard and hunting dog. Originally, the breed was bred by farmers and hunters to protect livestock and assist in hunting wild boars and other large game. The Perro Dogo Mallorquin is characterized by its endurance, strength, and loyalty, qualities that made it an indispensable companion on the island. Despite its long tradition, the breed remained regionally limited for a long time before becoming increasingly known outside Mallorca in the 20th century.

The Perro Dogo Mallorquin is a confident and intelligent dog that requires consistent and patient training. Similar to the German Shepherd, it is important to understand and specifically guide its natural instincts and protective drive. The Dogo Mallorquin shows a high willingness to learn but is sensitive to training methods – therefore, training should always be positive and reward-based. Compared to the Labrador, the Dogo is less playful but equally needs meaningful activities that challenge both body and mind. Boredom can quickly lead to unwanted behavior, which is why regular, varied training sessions and clear rules are essential. Frustration tolerance and impulse control should be encouraged early to maintain a balanced and well-socialized dog. The Perro Dogo Mallorquin is well suited for dog sports that demand its strength and endurance, such as protection work or mantrailing. At the same time, a close bond between dog and owner is important, as it is very people-oriented and needs clear leadership. Overall, the Dogo Mallorquin requires time, consistency, and empathy in training. Those who make this investment will gain a loyal, brave, and versatile companion who, with the right support, becomes a balanced family member.
The Perro Dogo Mallorquin is a strong and muscular breed that requires a balanced diet to stay healthy and fit. High-quality food with a good proportion of proteins and nutrients is important to maintain muscle mass and control weight. Be careful to avoid overfeeding, as these dogs can be prone to overweight, which puts strain on the joints. The short, dense coat of the Dogo Mallorquin is easy to care for and only needs occasional brushing, about once a week, to remove loose hairs and keep the skin healthy. During the shedding season in spring and autumn, increased hair loss can occur; regular brushing helps keep the coat in good condition. The Dogo Mallorquin is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate and tolerates both heat and milder temperatures well. Nevertheless, in extreme heat, sufficient shade and water should be provided to prevent overheating. In winter, the short coat offers less protection, so a dog coat can be useful in cold temperatures.
