Relative to other breeds
The Perro de Pastor Mallorquín is a very primitive and robust breed with few documented breed-specific hereditary diseases. Nevertheless, buyers should look for health screenings for hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED), as these large dogs can be susceptible to these conditions. Additionally, as with many larger breeds, there is a certain risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).

What matters most
Especially with a Majorca Shepherd Dog, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquín is a pitch-black, incredibly robust dog with a strong character—bred as an independent Hütehund (herding dog) and Schutzhund (guard dog) that can herd livestock in the heat and defend the farm unconditionally. They usually form an extremely deep bond with just one person.
Perfect for you if:
- You already have solid experience with protective breeds and lead a dog with calm, absolute confidence.
- You live in a rural area with a securely fenced property where he can live out his deeply ingrained guarding instincts.
- You are looking for a loyal companion who bonds extremely closely with one primary person and values that relationship above all else.
- You can offer him a real job, as this working dog will quickly make his own—often inconvenient—decisions if he lacks a clear task.
Less ideal if:
- You expect a dog that obeys blindly—he was bred to assess situations with livestock himself and act without your command if necessary.
- You live in a busy city where strangers or other dogs are constantly crossing his path and triggering his guarding instincts.
- You have an open house with lots of spontaneous visitors—his deep distrust of strangers is not shyness, but a fixed genetic program.
The real vibes check
A Perro de Pastor Mallorquín is not a dog for the local dog park; he is a vigilant shadow who guards his territory with absolute seriousness. You aren't getting a playful companion, but an archaic colleague who will only grant you his respect once you have proven that you have the situation just as confidently under control as he does.

Training & Education
The Perro de Pastor Mallorquín is an intelligent and hardworking herding dog that requires consistent and varied training. Similar to the German Shepherd, it is important to encourage its natural instincts without overwhelming it. The Mallorquín shows a high willingness to learn and is well suited for dog sports such as obedience, agility, or mantrailing. Training should be positive and reward-based to build a trusting bond. Due to its pronounced protective and herding behavior, early socialization is essential so that it learns to control impulses and tolerate frustration. As with the Labrador, it is important to allow the dog rest periods and not constantly demand from it. The Perro de Pastor Mallorquín needs meaningful activity that challenges both physically and mentally. It is not a dog for passive owners, but for people who invest time and commitment to meet its needs. With the right leadership, it becomes a loyal, attentive, and versatile companion.
Nutrition & Care
The Mallorcan Shepherd Dog requires a balanced diet rich in high-quality proteins to support its active and hardworking nature. Make sure the food contains all essential nutrients and adjust the amount to avoid overweight. Due to its medium to large size, special food for active or medium-sized breeds can be beneficial. The coat of the Mallorcan Shepherd is short to medium length, dense, and weather-resistant, which protects it well from cold and moisture. Regular brushing, about once a week, is usually sufficient to keep the coat clean and healthy and to remove loose hair. During the shedding season in spring and autumn, increased shedding can occur, and more intensive brushing is recommended then. The Mallorcan Shepherd is adapted to the Mediterranean climate but also copes well with cooler temperatures. In extreme heat, sufficient shade and water should be provided to prevent overheating. Overall, this breed is robust but requires regular exercise and care to stay healthy and balanced.

Experiences with the Majorca Shepherd Dog
