Relative to other breeds
As a brachycephalic breed, the Petit Brabançon frequently suffers from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which can significantly impair daily breathing. There is also an increased risk of the painful neurological condition syringomyelia, as well as patellar luxation. Since there are few reliable genetic tests available for these breed-specific issues, selective breeding is particularly challenging and carries a higher degree of risk.

What matters most
Especially with a Petit Brabançon, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Petit Brabancon is an expressive, people-oriented companion dog—bred to live closely by your side without any hunting ambitions, yet equipped with the self-confidence of a large guardian.
Perfect for you if:
- You are looking for a dog whose primary job is your company—it was selected as a pure companion dog and does not require hours of intense work.
- You appreciate a dog with almost human-like facial expressions and a big ego, whom you lead with humor rather than strict drills.
- You live in the city or an apartment and are looking for a compact, adaptable companion for urban daily life.
- You can take your dog almost anywhere, as it values being close to its human above all else.
Less ideal if:
- You expect a completely silent follower—as an attentive companion with Terrier roots, it will reliably alert you to unusual noises.
- You are looking for an enduring partner for long jogging sessions or demanding dog sports in any weather.
- You work full-time away from home and would have to leave it alone for many hours regularly.
- You have very small, boisterous children at home who cannot yet gauge the physical limits of this small dog.
The real vibes check
The Petit Brabancon is a big dog that accidentally ended up in a tiny body. When it looks at you with its distinct facial expressions, it is carefully evaluating whether your suggestion makes sense to it. You aren't getting a submissive order-follower, but a character-filled shadow that will enrich your life with plenty of humor and even more self-confidence.

History
Originally from Belgium, the Petit Braban"on is one of three variations of the Belgian Griffons, along with the Brussels Griffon and the Belgian Griffon. They share a common history and are descended from small, wire-haired dogs that were used to hunt rats and mice in stables and stables in Belgium in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, these small dogs became more and more popular, both for their practical utility and for their charming personalities and attractive looks. They were particularly valued by the Belgian Queen Marie Henriette, who contributed to the development of today's breeds by adding small imported smooth-coated dogs such as the King Charles Spaniel and the Pug to the original Belgian stable dogs. The Petit Braban"on was then named after the Belgian province of Brabant, home of the Queen. The Petit Braban"on as we know it today was recognized as a separate breed in 1880, with the main difference from the other two Griffon breeds being the texture and color of its coat.
The Petit Brabançon was originally used to combat rats in stables and households and later developed into a companion dog.

The breeder's role
Responsible breeders have the knees, eyes, and nervous system thoroughly checked and pay strict attention to clear airways—though the fundamental risks of this breed cannot be completely eliminated even with that.
