Relative to other breeds
As an ancient hunting breed, the Podenco Canario is extremely robust, which is why there are no mandatory genetic tests for conditions like Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) or hip dysplasia (HD). Since there are hardly any known breed-specific hereditary diseases, the breed enjoys excellent health. Prospective buyers should simply look for the general fitness of the parent dogs, as genetic defects are an absolute rarity in this breed.

What matters most
Especially with a Podenco Canario, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.
See HonestDog breeder standards →Is the Podenco Canario right for you?
The Podenco Canario is a slender, explosively fast athlete—a self-sufficient primitive hunting dog bred in rugged volcanic rock to hunt rabbits entirely on its own using its eyes, ears, and nose.
Perfect for you if:
- You love long hikes and accept that off-leash freedom often remains a lifelong dream due to their intense prey drive.
- You appreciate a cat-like independence at home and don't need a dog that wants to please you at every turn.
- Ideally, you have a high-fenced, escape-proof garden where they can safely burn off energy with their sprints.
- You lead with calm confidence, as this sensitive free spirit will completely withdraw if met with harshness or stubborn drilling.
Less ideal if:
- You expect a reliable recall when they spot game—they were bred to make their own decisions in that exact moment.
- You live in the middle of a hectic city center, as sensory overload causes immense stress for these often sensitive, primitive dogs.
- You are looking for a partner for classic obedience competitions who will joyfully and repetitively carry out commands.
The real vibes check
Outside, the Podenco Canario is a focused hunter that switches from a relaxed trot to an explosive chase in a fraction of a second—inside, they transform into a heat-loving cat that will doze for hours on the softest sofa cushion. You aren't getting an obedient command-follower, but a gentle, highly sensitive roommate who will offer you their affection as long as you don't try to break their wild soul.

History
The exact origin of the Podenco Canario is not known, but it is believed that its ancestors lived in the Canary Islands over 3000 years ago. These dogs were used by the indigenous people, the Guanches, as hunting dogs for rabbits, a task that they still perform excellently today. The breed has been present on the islands for centuries, but was only officially recognized as a breed by the FCI in 1982. Despite their long history and official recognition, Podencos Canarios are rarely found outside of Spain and especially the Canary Islands.
Bred to hunt rabbits in difficult terrain, the Podenco Canario is characterized by its speed and agility.

Character & Temperament
If you own a Podenco Canario, you will quickly realize that he is a dog with many facets. On the one hand, he is an energetic and passionate hunter with a strong prey drive, but on the other hand, he often shows a rather calm and sensitive side at home. When dealing with their people, Podencos Canarios are loving and loyal, but with a certain degree of independence. They develop a close bond with their caregiver, but can sometimes be a bit reserved towards strangers. However, their need for independence does not mean that they like to be left alone for long periods of time. They enjoy the company of their humans and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long. Their hunting instinct is very strong. They are particularly responsive to visual stimuli and have excellent hearing, making them excellent hunters. This should be taken into account if you have a Podenco Canario, especially if you live in an area with a lot of wildlife. A securely fenced garden is therefore essential. Podencos Canarios are active and agile dogs that require a lot of exercise. They love to run and play and need enough exercise every day. In addition, they have an intelligent and curious mind and also need mental stimulation to be happy. Despite their energy, Podencos Canarios can also be calm and relaxed pets if they get enough exercise. They love spending time with their family and can be quite cuddly. They are often cautious and sensitive, and it is important to treat them with patience and understanding. Overall, the Podenco Canario is a wonderful companion for active people who are willing to meet its needs. With enough exercise and activity, a loving and patient upbringing and an understanding of his peculiarities, this independent and loving dog will be a loyal and happy companion.

Training & Education
Podenco Canario are intelligent and eager to learn dogs, but they can also have an independent and sometimes stubborn side. Therefore, training this breed requires a lot of patience and a positive, reward-based approach. They do not respond well to harsh or inflexible training methods. Early socialization and training are very important to ensure that the Podenco Canario becomes a good and socially acceptable dog. Due to their high energy and agility, Podenco Canarios are well suited to various dog sports, such as agility, obedience or dog dancing. However, they should not be over-employed as they also need rest periods. Because they have a strong hunting instinct, they should always be kept under control when not in a secured area. Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise. They love brain games and nose work, which satisfies their hunting instincts in a positive way. It is also important to teach them impulse control to control unwanted hunting behavior.
Nutrition & Care
The Podenco Canario's diet should be balanced and high quality to cover its high energy needs. A high meat content is recommended as he is an active dog. In addition, fruits, vegetables and carbohydrates should be included in appropriate amounts. The amount of feeding can vary depending on the dog's age, weight and activity level. Caring for the Podenco Canario is relatively easy. Its coat is short and has no undercoat, so it sheds less than other breeds. A regular brush will help remove loose hair and keep the coat clean and shiny. Despite its short coat, the Podenco Canario can cope with the German climate quite well, but it is sensitive to cold and may need a coat in low temperatures.
