History
The Styrian Wire-haired Bracket, as the name suggests, comes from Styria in Austria. It has been used there since the late 19th century, primarily for hunting big game, especially deer. The exact origin of the breed is unclear, but it is believed to have descended from local dogs and possibly from introduced Hounds from the Balkans. This breed was specifically bred for its tracking skills. It should be able to follow the trail of game even on difficult terrain and reliably guide hunters to their target. The recognition of the Styrian Wire-haired Bracket as an independent breed by the FCI took place in 1889. Since then, the breed has been widespread in its native Austria and also in Germany, where it is valued by hunters for its robust nature and fine instinct.
