History
The Segugio Italiano, also known as the Italian Hound, is a very old breed that dates back to ancient times. It is believed to have descended from Egyptian dogs that were spread around the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians. The Segugio was valued early on as an excellent hunting dog and is depicted on many Roman coins and sculptures. Over the centuries, the Segugio Italiano has been used primarily to hunt wild boar and hares. He was valued for his ability to work as both a sight hunter and a sniffer dog, being characterized by his exceptional endurance and keen sense of smell. The breed was officially recognized in the 1920s and has since maintained its popularity in Italy and increasingly abroad, although it is still relatively unknown outside of its home country.
