The history of the Schillerstövar begins in the 19th century in Sweden. The breed was specifically bred as a versatile hunting dog for tracking and pursuing game. Named after the Swedish poet Friedrich Schiller, the Schillerstövar is characterized by its endurance, keen sense of smell, and enthusiasm for work. It was primarily used for hunting big game such as roe deer and red deer and remains very popular among Swedish hunters to this day. The official recognition of the breed took place at the beginning of the 20th century.
