Dangerous Dogs
In Rheinland-Pfalz, three breeds are considered dangerous by law:
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Staffordshire Bullterrier
- Bullterrier (included depending on interpretation)
— plus crossbreeds.
Additionally, a dog of any breed can be classified as dangerous by the regulatory authority (individual case).
What owners need
- Haltungserlaubnis (permit) for ownership
- Sachkundenachweis (proof of competence)
- Dog liability insurance
- Minimum age of owner: 18 years
- Microchip identification
Insurance
Mandatory for owners of dangerous dogs.
Everyday rules
- Leash and muzzle requirement outside of one's own property
- Breeding ban
- Exemption from requirements possible in individual cases upon application
