The essentials — key facts, traits, and health priorities — before you dive deeper.
Health grade
Relative to other breeds
As a primitive livestock guardian breed, the Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina is considered very robust, yet structured health screening is almost entirely lacking. Typical large-breed issues such as hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED) therefore represent an unpredictable risk, which is why buyers should personally verify that the parent dogs have been tested. Furthermore, due to their impressive size, there is always a risk of acute gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).

What matters most
Especially with a Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina is a massive, incorruptible, and self-sufficient Herdenschutzhund (livestock guardian dog)—bred to independently defend herds in the Carpathians against bears, which makes him a confident decision-maker with a deeply rooted sense of territory.
Perfect for you if:
- You own a spacious, extremely securely fenced property in the countryside that he can guard—without a real job, this breed will wither.
- You already have sound experience with Herdenschutzhunde and value independent thinking over blind obedience.
- You lead a quiet household without a constant stream of visitors, as he naturally views strangers as potential threats to his territory.
- You prefer relaxed, controlled walks and are not looking for an agile partner for fast-paced dog sports.
Less ideal if:
- You live in a densely populated residential area or an apartment—as a nocturnal guardian, he will comment on every movement at the fence with a booming bark.
- You expect him to happily turn around immediately upon command—he was bred to assess situations himself and often acts only after his own verification.
- You are planning relaxed trips to an overcrowded dog park where he is expected to play with every strange dog he meets.
- You are physically unable to hold up to 70 kilos of pure determination on the leash if he believes he has spotted a threat.
The real vibes check
A Bucovina Shepherd is not a cuddly XXL family bear, but an uncompromising security guard who writes his own service regulations. If you respect him as an equal partner and set firm, calm boundaries, you will have the most loyal protector by your side—if you try to subdue him with harshness, he will simply refuse to follow you.

Training & Education
The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is a confident and independent livestock guardian dog that naturally possesses a strong protective instinct. Its training requires patience, consistency, and a calm, confident demeanor from the owner. Unlike Labradors or German Shepherds, it is especially important to establish a clear hierarchy and boundaries early on to avoid unwanted dominance behavior. The Bucovina Shepherd learns best through positive reinforcement, but training should always be respectful and without pressure, as he is sensitive to coercion. Due to his independent character, he is less dependent on constant activity but requires regular mental and physical exercise to remain balanced. Socialization is a central part of education to make the natural protective instinct manageable and to make the dog safe in dealing with people and other animals. The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is less suited for classic dog sports like agility or obedience but shows its strengths in protection work and guard duties. Overall, this breed demands a high level of experience, consistency, and responsibility. Those willing to invest time and energy in thorough training will gain a loyal, watchful, and independent companion who reliably protects his family.
Nutrition & Care
The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is a robust and confident dog breed that was originally used as a livestock guardian dog in the Carpathians. For its health, a balanced diet with high-quality, protein-rich food that contains all necessary nutrients is important. Due to its size and activity, controlled feeding amounts should be observed to avoid overweight and to protect the joints. The dense, double-layered coat of the Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina protects it excellently against cold and adverse weather conditions. It sheds seasonally, especially in spring and autumn, so regular brushing (2-3 times per week) is recommended to prevent matting and remove loose hair. This breed is well adapted to the Central European climate, copes well with cold winters, and requires sufficient shade and water in hot temperatures to avoid overheating.

Experiences with the Ciobanesc Romanesc de Bucovina
