Segmental aplasia of the mesonephric duct · Congenital absence of the vas deferens · Segmentale Aplasie des Wolffschen Ganges · Wolffian duct agenesis
This is a congenital birth defect of the male reproductive system where parts of the epididymis or vas deferens—the tubes that store and transport sperm—fail to develop. These structures normally form from an embryonic tissue called the Wolffian duct, and their partial absence prevents sperm from traveling normally. This structural gap typically leads to fertility issues in affected male dogs.
The condition is usually invisible from the outside and is typically discovered in young adulthood during fertility evaluations or a veterinary ultrasound. Occasionally, owners may notice signs of discomfort, swelling, or localized inflammation in the testicular area due to fluid buildup.
There is no treatment to restore fertility, but the condition itself is harmless unless complications like inflammation occur. If painful complications arise, a one-time castration surgery is recommended, which typically costs between 0 and 1000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
