Hemophilia is an inherited blood clotting disorder affecting the circulatory system, where the body lacks specific proteins needed for coagulation, which is the process of blood clotting. Because the blood cannot clot properly, even minor injuries can lead to prolonged internal or external bleeding. This condition is inherited through an X-linked genetic trait, meaning it primarily affects male dogs.
Symptoms typically become noticeable during puppyhood, often during teething or after minor bumps. Owners may observe prolonged bleeding from the gums, unexplained bruising under the skin, or sudden lameness caused by bleeding into the joints.
While hemophilia is a lifelong, incurable condition, it can be managed by avoiding rough play and certain medications. In emergencies, life-saving blood or plasma transfusions are required, with treatment costs typically ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 EUR depending on the frequency and severity of bleeding episodes.
