What it is
This is an inherited heart disease where the normal muscle tissue of the right ventricle, one of the heart's lower chambers, is gradually replaced by fat and fibrous scar tissue. This structural change disrupts the heart's electrical signals, which normally coordinate regular heartbeats. As a result, the dog's heart can develop dangerous, irregular rhythms.
How it presents
Symptoms typically become noticeable in middle-aged to older dogs and include sudden fainting spells, weakness, or collapse. In some severe cases, the first sign of the disease may unfortunately be sudden cardiac arrest without any prior warning.
Treatment
While the condition is incurable, it can be managed with lifelong heart medications and regular monitoring using a portable heart monitor. Lifetime management typically costs between €2,500 and €7,500.
