This is an inherited bone marrow disorder where the body's production of blood cells, particularly infection-fighting white blood cells, drops drastically at regular intervals. This cyclic drop temporarily leaves the dog's immune system highly vulnerable to infections. The condition is caused by a genetic mutation affecting how stem cells in the bone marrow mature.
Affected puppies are typically recognizable by a distinct silver-grey coat and begin showing symptoms in early puppyhood. Every 10 to 12 days, as their white blood cell count drops, they experience recurring bouts of fever, lethargy, joint pain, and infections.
There is no cure for this condition, and management requires lifelong, intensive supportive care, including frequent antibiotics and medical therapies during low-cell phases. The estimated cost for managing this severe condition ranges from 2,000 to 8,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
