This is a severe, progressive disease of the spinal cord and nervous system specifically affecting Bernese Mountain Dogs. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the SOD1 gene that leads to the gradual breakdown of the nerve pathways that send signals from the brain to the limbs. As these pathways deteriorate, the dog slowly loses the ability to coordinate its movements.
Symptoms typically appear around 8 years of age, starting with uncoordinated movements in the hind legs and muscle wasting. Over time, this weakness slowly progresses to complete, painless paralysis.
There is no cure for this progressive disease, and treatment is limited to supportive care such as physiotherapy and mobility aids. Lifelong management and equipment costs typically range from 1,000 to 5,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
