This is an inherited heart disease where a genetic mutation in the phospholamban (PLN) gene causes the heart muscle to become thin, stretched, and weak. As a result, the heart chambers enlarge and lose their ability to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. This progressive weakening eventually leads to heart failure.
Owners typically notice signs like rapid tiring during exercise, coughing, breathing difficulties, or fainting, which usually develop in middle-aged to older dogs.
The condition is incurable and requires lifelong daily cardiac medication and regular veterinary monitoring. Lifetime treatment and diagnostic costs typically range from €2,500 to €8,000.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
