Elliptocytosis is a genetic condition affecting the red blood cells, which are the cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Due to a structural variation, these cells develop an oval or elliptical shape instead of their normal round form. In dogs, this is typically a benign and harmless anomaly that does not impair the cells' ability to function.
This condition is almost always completely asymptomatic, meaning affected dogs show no outward signs of illness. It is typically discovered by chance during routine blood tests at any age.
No treatment is necessary for this benign condition, and affected dogs live normal, healthy lives. Lifelong costs are minimal, ranging from 0 to 500 EUR, which would only cover occasional routine blood monitoring during regular veterinary check-ups.
