Hypertension is a condition where a dog experiences chronically high blood pressure in their arteries, which are the blood vessels carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This constant pressure puts excessive strain on the cardiovascular system and can gradually damage vital organs, particularly the kidneys, eyes, and brain.
Owners may notice sudden blindness, dilated pupils, nosebleeds, or neurological signs like disorientation. These symptoms usually appear in older dogs, often because the high blood pressure is secondary to another chronic illness.
While it cannot be cured, hypertension is treatable with lifelong daily medication and regular veterinary check-ups. Managing this condition and its underlying causes typically costs between 1,500 and 6,000 EUR.
