Chronic myeloid leukemia(CML)
Also known as: Chronische myeloische Leukämie · Chronic Granulocytic Leukemia · CGL · Canine CML
Overview
What it is
Chronic myelogenous leukemia is a rare cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It occurs when an acquired genetic mutation causes the bone marrow to produce too many abnormal white blood cells, which are the cells responsible for fighting infections. These abnormal cells crowd out healthy blood cells, preventing the blood from carrying oxygen and clotting properly.
How it presents
This condition typically develops in older dogs and progresses slowly over time. Owners may notice gradual signs of illness such as low energy, decreased appetite, weight loss, pale gums, or a swollen abdomen due to an enlarged liver or spleen.
Treatment
While this cancer is not curable, it can be managed long-term with daily oral medications or chemotherapy to control white blood cell levels. This lifelong treatment requires frequent veterinary monitoring and blood tests, with expected costs ranging from €3,000 to €12,000.
