This is an inherited, degenerative disease of the nervous system, specifically affecting the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the protective myelin sheath—the insulating layer that surrounds nerve fibers to help transmit signals—is progressively destroyed. Without this protective coating, the nervous system cannot properly send messages to the rest of the body.
Owners typically first notice symptoms between 1 and 3 years of age, starting with an unsteady, wobbly gait and general coordination issues. These movement difficulties progressively worsen over time as the disease damages more of the nervous system.
There is no cure for this progressive condition, and treatment is limited to supportive and palliative care to maintain quality of life. Managing the disease typically costs between 500 and 2000 EUR, which covers diagnostic testing and comfort care until euthanasia becomes necessary.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
