Polycythemia
Also known as: Polyzythämie · Erythrozytose · Polycythemia vera · Erythrocytosis · Primary Polycythemia · …
Overview
What it is
Polycythemia is a condition involving an abnormal increase in red blood cells within the circulatory system, which causes the blood to become thick and sluggish. This thickening impairs normal blood flow and reduces the efficient delivery of oxygen to vital organs. It also increases the risk of blood clots forming in the blood vessels.
How it presents
Owners may notice deep red or purple gums, extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, or neurological signs like seizures. This condition is most commonly diagnosed in middle-aged dogs.
Treatment
While the condition is not curable, it can be managed long-term through regular blood removal (therapeutic phlebotomy) and medication. This lifelong management requires ongoing veterinary monitoring, with estimated costs ranging from €2,000 to €7,500.
