The first year costs the most
In year one, one-off spending lands on top of the running costs — which is why it sits well above later years.
The one-off items include the purchase price or adoption fee, the initial gear, plus puppy class and basic training. Add the first vaccinations and neutering, if you plan on it.
From the second year on, mainly the running costs remain: food, annual vet visits, insurance, grooming and supplies. Budgeting for these from the start avoids nasty surprises.
Dog cost questions, answered
How much does a dog cost per month?
Depending on size, region and setup, ongoing costs usually run between about 70 and 300 euros a month. That covers food, a vet reserve, insurance, grooming and supplies. The calculator builds an individual estimate from your choices.
How much does a dog cost per year?
Over a year the ongoing costs often add up to roughly 1,000 to 3,000 euros. Large breeds plus premium food and insurance sit at the top end, while small, low-maintenance dogs sit at the bottom.
How high are the upfront costs?
The price from a reputable breeder often ranges from a few hundred to over 2,000 euros depending on the breed. A rescue dog usually comes with an adoption fee. On top of that comes the initial gear.
Is pet insurance worth it?
Third-party liability insurance is mandatory in many German states and sensible anyway. Health or surgery insurance can save a lot on expensive treatment — whether it pays off depends on breed, age and the reserve you keep.
What's included in the initial gear?
Typically a collar and leash, bowls, a bed, a crate, grooming supplies and some first toys. Depending on quality, the initial gear usually costs between about 200 and 600 euros — the calculator includes it in the first year.
