Steer clear of sellers who advertise puppies well below the usual price range without pedigree papers. A clear warning sign with this breed is downplaying the MDR1 defect or the absence of a clinical eye examination for the puppies. If a seller is unwilling to show you written laboratory results for CEA, DMS or merle status, if the mother is missing when you visit, or if the puppies are growing up isolated in a kennel without family contact, you are dealing with irresponsible backyard breeders. Never buy out of pity; insist on full transparency about health and rearing.
On HonestDog, every breeder goes through a registration process before their profile goes live: identity verification by ID and selfie, proof of club membership or a §11 permit where applicable, a knowledge test on breeding and animal welfare, and agreement to the HonestDog breeding standards – including no breeding for traits that cause suffering (Qualzucht) and no breeding dogs under 18 months. Without a verified §11 permit, a breeder can register no more than two breeding females there, and you can report anything unusual about a breeder's profile directly via “Report content”. When you visit, ask to see the original results for the parents. You can find current litters under Smooth Collie puppies on HonestDog.
