Why choosing the right Golden Retriever breeder decides whether your dog lives a healthy life
The Golden Retriever wins people over with its friendly, intelligent and devoted nature. Originally bred in Scotland for waterfowl hunting and retrieving over rough terrain, this large dog (males reach 56–61 cm at the shoulder and weigh 30–34 kg) is now enormously family-friendly and highly trainable. But its very popularity means you need to take the greatest care when looking for a puppy. Although the breed is considered robust, it shows a clear health pattern: joints, eyes, skin changes and a breed-typical tendency toward cancer often remain issues throughout its life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. A health-focused Golden Retriever breeder doesn't simply pair two friendly dogs, but selects deliberately to limit these risks as far as possible through sound diagnostics and knowledge of the lines.
