Cream in the Shiba Inu

A cream Shiba Inu features a very light, ivory to soft beige coat consisting of a dense, plush undercoat and a straight outer coat. Subtle apricot or light red shadings often appear on the ear tips, dorsal line, and tail. Puppies are usually born near-white or softly tinted, with their hue subtly stabilizing as the adult coat develops. Genetically caused by a recessive genotype at the Extension locus (ee), the light pigmentation prevents the breed's hallmark urajiro markings from visibly contrasting against the body coat. Cream puppies appear occasionally in litters when both parents carry the recessive gene. Under the FCI breed standard (No. 257), cream is a non-standard color, as the official standard only recognizes red, sesame, and black and tan.

Colour is not a mark of quality. A price premium for a ‘rare’ colour is a warning sign.
