Bardet-Biedl-Syndrom Typ 2 · BBS2-related ciliopathy · Canine Bardet-Biedl syndrome · BBS2-PRA
Bardet-Biedl syndrome type 2 is an inherited systemic disorder caused by a genetic defect that impairs the function of cilia, which are tiny, antenna-like structures on the surface of cells. Because these structures are crucial for cellular communication, their malfunction damages multiple organ systems at the same time. This particularly impacts the eyes and the kidneys.
Affected dogs typically begin to lose their vision in early adulthood due to progressive retinal degeneration. Owners may also notice their dog gaining weight easily or showing signs of kidney issues, such as drinking more water and urinating more frequently.
There is no cure for this condition, requiring lifelong management focused on specialized diets, weight control, and supportive care for kidney complications. Ongoing treatment and monitoring typically cost between 500 and 3,000 EUR.
Estimated range of typical treatment cost. Actual cost depends on severity, clinic and region.
