Von Willebrand disease is an inherited bleeding disorder that affects the blood's ability to clot properly. It is caused by a deficiency or malfunction of the von Willebrand factor, a specific protein that helps blood platelets stick together to plug damaged blood vessels. Without enough of this functional protein, the clotting process is delayed, which can lead to excessive bleeding even from minor injuries.
Owners may notice prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, frequent nosebleeds, bleeding gums during teething, or blood in the stool or urine. These signs typically become apparent early in life, often during puppyhood or when the dog undergoes routine surgeries.
While the condition is lifelong and cannot be cured, it can be managed through careful lifestyle adjustments and avoiding drugs that interfere with clotting. In emergencies or during surgeries, specialized therapies or transfusions may be required, with lifetime management costs typically ranging from 500 to 4,000 EUR.
