Hüftluxation · Hüftgelenksluxation · Hip luxation · Dislocated hip · Coxofemoral dislocation
Coxofemoral luxation is the complete dislocation of the hip joint, which occurs when the ball-shaped head of the thigh bone slips out of its socket in the pelvis. This skeletal injury is usually caused by physical trauma, though it can happen more easily in dogs with pre-existing hip instability. Veterinarians confirm this displacement using orthogonal pelvic radiographs, which are specialized X-rays taken from different angles.
An owner will typically notice sudden, severe lameness, with the dog holding the affected hind leg up and refusing to bear any weight on it. The hip area may appear visibly uneven or misaligned, and the dog will experience acute pain. This condition can occur at any age, as it is most frequently triggered by an accident or injury.
The condition is treatable through a one-time intervention, which involves putting the joint back in place under anesthesia or performing stabilizing surgery. The typical cost for treatment and follow-up care ranges from 1,200 to 5,500 EUR. While the initial correction is a one-time event, some dogs may require temporary physical therapy to regain full mobility.
